Treatment for Chronic Knee Pain

Treatment for Chronic Knee Pain—Without Surgery.

Close to 20% of people suffer from chronic, persistent knee pain. The kind that keeps you up at night and inhibits daily activity. Fortunately, surgery is no longer the only option. After all, surgery isn’t for everyone—nor is a daily regimen of prescription pain medication. Instead, PAA now offers a 30-minute outpatient procedure called Coolief that can alleviate pain for a year or more—in some cases, even two years. And it’s performed by our anesthesiologists, who are pain experts.

Coolief is a minimally invasive procedure that uses cooled radiofrequency energy to safely treat chronic knee pain. It heats and cools the knee tissue, targeting the sensory nerves that are causing the pain, offering relief for up to 24 months. It’s an ideal option for a list of patients: those with failed knee replacements, bariatric patients who are working to become healthy enough for surgery, and individuals who simply wish to avoid surgery altogether.

Coolief is an outpatient procedure, and the entire appointment generally lasts about two hours. Pain is rare because, unlike surgery, Coolief involves no incision. Some patients do experience mild discomfort at the radiofrequency site, but that can be managed with simple over-the-counter medication. Most patients go home shortly after the procedure and return to work and normal everyday activities within several days. Most patients begin to feel pain relief within a week or two. Some report long-lasting relief, while others may require additional treatments.

Chronic pain of any sort can be debilitating. Life-altering, even. As pain experts, we understand that. But we also understand that every patient is different. And there is always more than one way to treat pain. If you suffer from chronic knee pain, make an appointment with one of our anesthesiologists. We’ll discuss your pain, your lifestyle, and what you are (and aren’t) willing to do. Together we can figure out the best option for you.
